December 9th Home to Plough Horntails

Once again it was a merry meeting with familiar faces as we welcomed the Plough Horntails who have now returned to the newly reopened Plough Tavern after its recent troubles. We look forward to our away game in the hope that the high standards of hospitality and supper are maintained.

Questions had been set by the Bate Taverners and the Lamb Shanks and a lot of thought had gone into both sets – the fact that some rounds went by with no-one gaining three points must not detract from a good effort. For instance one round asked for the fictional character after giving the residence. One question that created much discussion was 21 in the General Knowledge even though the answer was in the question!!

At the end of the specialist rounds, the Lemmings had managed a slender lead of 62 to 51 but they saw that gradually eaten away by the Horntails but with a late recovery managed to get a draw in the General Knowledge with 73 each; final score 135 to 124.

Individual scores were Bob 9/18, Wendy 9/21. Nick 12/6, Tomo 15/15; conferred points were 10/15 with 7/8 pass-overs. The Horntails picked up 4/12 pass-overs.

The evening was rounded off with a selection of Brian’s home-cooked beef or cheese sandwiches.

Thanks are due to the question setters, the question master from the Bate, the question setters, The Plough Taverners and of course Brian.

We enjoyed the specialists, but our initial feel about the GK's was generally fine with a few significant irritations. Despite our Londoner's assertion that London Bridge wasn't a terminus, that question was fine, slightly more worrying was that our opponent who had worked as a Merchant Seaman and gone through the Panama Canal many times had never heard of Panamax, however Mr. Hargreaves had probably settled on dry land by 2006 when it was introduced. More a question for deduction than knowledge? A slight doubt is over a couple of questions where the level of detail was not made clear - it ended up with the QM to decide whether one needed to know that Au came from the Latin for Gold, or the exact term - the same could be said of the white lines in the middle of the road. The more the answerer knows before deciding whether to confer or answer the better.

Maybe it is just me, but I also felt that being the second player (especially the one taking #4 in the specialists) had every chance of a big score, whilst those playing first and third (both sides) had a much tougher challenge.

There were a good number of interesting and answerable questions though, although what with villains and scoundrels followed by a liberal smattering of serial murderers, not for the faint-hearted.

I love these comments and would welcome more

Alan is quite right - 10 out of the 12 games this week had "PB" scores from people going second, that was the place to be!

Despite not finding everyone else's questions that easy I have to admity I went 4th in the specialist and 2nd in the GK - and increased my personal best ever by at least 6.

I usually ignore "bias" claims because you get statistical clumping, but I wonder if the other 9 had similarly high PBs?
